A black mulberry stands next to the path near the tennis courts and rose garden. (Next to large wooden squirrel) Girth measurement at 150 cm includes some burls but is still 220 below these at around 50 cm. John Cator built a manor house on the site in 1762. In 1902 it became a school (Craven College) and in 1905 a sanatorium. In 1927 the LCC acquired the estate. In 1933 a golf course laid out in the early 1900s became public; it closed in 2016. In 2017 it received a £4.7 m HLF grant for regeneration.
