The house was built in 1771. House belongs to Earl Cadogan. The house was lived in for a time in the 1950s by the actor Rex Harrison. An article in the Steeple Times shows a recumbent mulberry, said to date from 1776, in a lawn alongside tree ferns. The house is on the site of Beaufort House, itself a late 16th c redevelopment on the site of Thomas More's 'Great House', to which he moved in 1518 and where he lived until he was executed in 1532.
